Understanding the Clair Senses

When we talk about psychic ability, many people immediately picture crystal balls or tarot cards. But beneath those tools lies something even more essential: the clair senses — the intuitive channels through which we receive information from beyond the physical.

You may have heard terms like “clairvoyant” or “clairaudient” and wondered what they mean. The word clair is French for “clear,” and each clair sense refers to a different form of intuitive perception. Understanding your dominant clairs can help you tap into your natural abilities and trust what you feel.

The Eight Clair Senses

Here are the most commonly recognized clair senses:

  • Clairvoyance (Clear Seeing): Images, symbols, or mental visions that appear in your mind’s eye — almost like watching a movie inside your head.

  • Clairaudience (Clear Hearing): Hearing words, sounds, or messages from spirit, your higher self, or energy fields.

  • Clairsentience (Clear Feeling): The ability to feel emotions, energies, or even physical sensations from people, places, or spirits.

  • Claircognizance (Clear Knowing): When you just know something without understanding why — sudden, unquestionable insight.

  • Clairalience (Clear Smelling): Smelling scents not physically present (like perfume, smoke, or flowers), often linked to spirits or memory triggers.

  • Clairgustance (Clear Tasting): Tasting something without eating it — often linked to mediumship or ancestral connection.

  • Clairtangency (Clear Touch): Receiving intuitive impressions through physical touch, like reading an object or photo (psychometry).

  • Clairintellect (Clear Thinking): When intuitive information flows in as thoughts that feel different from your own inner dialogue.

Developing Your Clair Senses

Everyone has intuitive capacity, though different senses may be more dominant. Some people are visual and lean into clairvoyance, while others are emotional empaths with strong clairsentience.

To build your own intuitive language:

  • Start with self-awareness. How do messages show up for you?

  • Keep a journal of dreams, gut feelings, or signs that come through in your daily life.

  • Practice mindfulness to quiet the mind and notice subtle messages.

  • Work with tools like meditation, tarot, or sound to strengthen your connection.

Trust What You Feel

The clair senses aren’t supernatural — they’re super natural. They’re the ways our spirit communicates with the world around and beyond us. As Doug often reminds listeners: trust what you feel. Your intuition is already speaking. Learning its language is just the beginning.
